Bleg #1: A TV Subscription?

with 2 comments

I suspect that the question is part of the answer. If I felt that I really, really needed more TV, then I would have arranged a cable-tv subscription long ago. But the situation is this: Presently, I receive TV by using a free-to-air MPEG2 DTT decoder. In that way, I have four channels – DR1, DR2, DR Update and TV2 Denmark.

The thing is that my rent contract doesn’t include cable and last autumn I couldn’t make up my mind about how much TV I wanted access to. So instead I bought an areal and the cheapest digital decoder – that, all in all, cost the equivalent of two months of cable.

Now, Denmark is going digital big bang-style in November which means that the number of channels on terrestrial TV is going to increase massively – if you have an MPEG4 decoder. So, I could get a new decoder and a cheap subscription (89 DKK per month plus 800 DKK … hmmm … for the subscription per year) would include TV2 News. Add 19 DKK per month and Discovery will be thrown in.

Getting TV2 News on cable means getting the large package (that’s 320 DKK per month, thank you) plus some kind of one-off opening fee. No, I’m not really into the Danish soccer league.

Or I could do nothing. I would lose DR Update (which is also broadcast over the, like, internet) but the set-up will work until 2012 or whenever I move before that time.

Decisions, decisions. If only cable had been included, it would have been so much easier.

Before Russia Was Red It Was in Colours

without comments

Amazing colour photos from czarist Russia. I’m always amazed by colour photos from before the 1950s. I mean: Who would have thought that World War II was fought in colour?

Ironic twist: If it hadn’t been for the US Library of Congress, the collection might have been lost.

HT: Marginal Revolution.
