The funny thing is that Britain has become much LESS American, at least in terms of popular culture. When I was a lad, British pop stars used to sing in ridiculous American accents, and the prime-time TV schedules were dominated by weak American sitcoms. Not any more. Thought-provoking stuff. Rather saddening report on Swedish Radio this morning from Roskilda festival where a (non-Swedish-looking) reporter posed as a scavenger and described racist abuse and even violence directed against "gypsies" who work to pick up the rubbish the festival-goers leave (recycleable cans and bottles mostly). Not just describe either - he'd recorded some of the abuse shouted at him. All in Danish, I'm sorry to say. But it does bear out what you write. Ah you see – I was way, way out!
