Notes from the Outside of the Inside

Fraudsters

without comments

A nasty story from Germany: 16 researchers from the University of Göttingen are accused of forging publications in order to obtain research grants. DeutschlandRadio had an interview with Ulrike Beisiegel from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – mp3 – (here is an earlier interview and a comment written by Beisiegel in response to an earlier case).

On the one hand it is a bit strange that forged publications aren’t immediately obvious, but on the other hand the incentive structures in much modern research can give tricky effects.
