I’ve been waiting for this and finally somebody snapped. I’m not that surprised. I mean – who leaves mattresses in a laundry room? Swedish readers might enjoy the Arga Lappen blog, by the way.
This is very bad indeed: Over the weekend we have had three instances where innocent members of the public have been victims of gang-related shootings in Copenhagen. This has led to two people being killed and four injured.
What makes this so scary is that the victims weren’t accidental bystanders hit by ricochetting bullets but deliberately (mistakenly) targeted by the criminals. So the gang-members aren’t just dangerous, they are also beyond any kind of control.
The general explanation for this mess is that the police decided to curb the activities of pushers on Christiania and as a consequence spread the selling of drugs to all of Copenhagen and opened the market to new actors (immigrant gangs). But there must be more to this: Much as I dislike “bikers”, they at least tried to avoid gunning down non-participants. Perhaps one reason is that “bikers” and immigrant gangs have no common points of reference: They know what a “biker” and an “immigrant” look like, but people can have tatoos or be Arab or Turkish (or whatever) without being criminals. I could imagine that there must also be a very low level of organisation and information among the gangs.
Finally, the question is if we are also seeing some of the fall-out of the police reform, which was more or less implemented in 2007 and has been described as deeply problematic.
Manchester is being noted as a possible model for policies in Copenhagen. It will be interesting to see if there is anything to learn and – if so – Danish police is able to learn and implement changes.
Update: I must (?) admit that I think it is pretty sickening when Jørgen “Jønke” Nielsen – a convicted and unrepentant assassin – is quoted and interviewed by Danish media as an official spokesman for Hell’s Angels, but it is hard not to notice that the immigrant gangs on Inner Nørrebro just managed to commit the ultimate public relations suicide by threatening food deliveries to old age pensioners.
