Perhaps a little to my surprise, I’ve learnt that it’s a bit odd that I grew up in Copenhagen and now live in Odense. The reason? Well, in Denmark the Christensens are most frequent in Vendsyssel while the old industrial towns of Randers and Ålborg house the highest number of people who share my surname.

The real surprise (to me) is that a) Western and South Western Jutland aren’t more prominent on the map1 and b) that the regional variations from the 18th and 19th Century can still be seen in the distribution of surnames in Denmark.2

But what if I (like many children born today) had my mother’s maiden name?

As it is, we can see that a) the Lassens are a much rarer breed compared with the Christensens and b) they are scattered in parts of Jutland as well as South Jutland. My mother will be pleased to learn that her maiden name actually places her in her place of birth.

Experian Navnekort.

HT: Blogbogstaver.

  1. I know that my paternal grandfather was born near Ribe, but my great-grandfather’s background still has to be researched – rumour has it that he was a slightly shady character… []
  2. In case you wonder, Christen (or Chresten) is a regional variation of the name Christian []
