My maternal grandfather was born in Ullerup in 1902 and as such (fortunately) too young for military service but some of his other brothers had to serve in the German army and navy. In a short history of his family, written before his death in 1975, my grandfather briefly mentioned his brothers’ service and some of the incidents during their time in the German forces.
German?
Yes. Like many Danes in Sønderjylland (or North Schleswig), my ancestors had to choose between relinquishing German citizenship and lose all political rights, or keeping the citizenship and their political rights at the price of being forced to do German military service.
