No, not The Office, but the Office (as concept). Anyway, the first thing I was sucked into at my new job was the prospect of not only having to relocate to temporary premises within a month (as of the end of next week, I along with the rest of the team will be consigned to the barracks) but also the long-term prospects for a new building for the Department of Political Science.
And as you may have guessed, the planning committee had come up with the state-of-the-art strong-research-environment solution: Open-plan offices. (As it is, some people are sharing offices 3 and 3, and they are not too happy about it)
The best strategy for the department management is in all likelihood to stall the process for so long that open-plan offices are a management fad of the past. Otherwise I can see people slowly but steadily head for their home offices. So much for the strong environment. And in my experience, having a well-placed coffee brewer is much more important.
