Lots of things can be said about headscarves and whether or not they and other symbols are compatible with public service, but political scientists will agree about one – okay: two – things:
- In Denmark, immigration and integration are poisonous policy issues for the Social Democrats. Any kind of controversy on either subject will see the Social Democrats getting whacked.
- A party which wants to present itself as an alternative to the government has to be seen leading, not following the public debate. Disagreeing internally and doing about-turns within 24 hours does not exactly leave the public with an impression of political leadership.
