Wheat Bread

without comments

A couple of weeks late (at least according to Danish tradition) but better late than never.

My great-grandfather was a baker but I can’t exactly claim that I can compete with him in this field of work.

Suburbia vs. the Internet

without comments

Does the internet make the concept of distance obsolete, or is it the other way around? Paul Krugman considers the US case after reading a report about broadband:

But what distinguishes America is the fact that were so suburban: our metro areas sprawl, which means long copper loops (hence slow DSL) and high costs if you want to run fiber direct to homes.

The summary of the report – in case anybody would like to save a click to Krugman’s blog – is here.

A Note to the Danish Social Democrats

without comments

Lots of things can be said about headscarves and whether or not they and other symbols are compatible with public service, but political scientists will agree about one – okay: two – things:

  1. In Denmark, immigration and integration are poisonous policy issues for the Social Democrats. Any kind of controversy on either subject will see the Social Democrats getting whacked.
  2. A party which wants to present itself as an alternative to the government has to be seen leading, not following the public debate. Disagreeing internally and doing about-turns within 24 hours does not exactly leave the public with an impression of political leadership.
