The Social Democrats: Will They or Won’t They?

with 2 comments

Peter Mogensen says “won’t“, Niels Krause-Kjær says, well, “ought to” (support an intervention in the health care workers’ strike, that is).

Why the difference in opinions? Basically, Peter Mogensen – who used to be an advisor to former PM Poul Nyrup Rasmussen – doubts that the Social Democrats have the resources to lead in a conflict, while Krause-Kjær – a former Conservative spin-doctor – thinks that the Social Democrats have to show that they are leading, not following events if they are to maintain their position as the main opposition party. So Mogensen is making an empirical, Krause-Kjær a normative statement.

I really have no idea where this will end – except that there will be some kind of government intervention if the strike goes on for 10-14 days: Both Mogensen and Krause-Kjær are experienced observers of Danish politics. But just the very fact that we in all earnest are discussing whether Helle Thorning-Schmidt or Villy Søvndal is the leader of the opposition is amazing.

Danish Urban History during the Era of Absolutism

without comments

I’m not sure if I’m contractually obliged to promote my family, but I’d just like to note that my cousin Søren Bitsch Christensen, who is an associate professor in history at Århus University, is the co-editor of a new anthology about urban development in Denmark during the Absolutist Era (that is 1660-1848, in case you wonder).

If it wasn’t because I’m trying to get rid of stuff, I’d buy the thing myself.

The Server Is Down

without comments

Today, the Self-Government Commission for Greenland is to publish its final report, but the server of the Home-Rule Authority has crashed completely.

I’m waiting anxiously, but let me just note that the only Danish party which seems to want to make politics out of the report is the Danish People’s Party.

Update: The homepage is up again, but there is no precise information about when the report will be made available.

The Day of the Squirrels

without comments

I’m not sure why, but Wednesday brought lots of squirrels on the most unexpected places:

  1. Eaten.
  2. Recycled.
  3. Nutsy.
