So, You’re a PhD and You Want to Get a Job?
Two threads worth following for (prospective) PhDs. The action – which mainly draws on US experiences – is in the comments in both cases:
- Scatterplot on how to get a job outside of academia (aka “the Real World”)
- Brian Leiter on how to get a job at a teaching department (as opposed to a research department)
Just one comment: I think we can say that as a rule universities and colleges – and their managements in particular – define their value solely on different types of research rankings, while most of the visible work of colleges and universities out in the “Real World” are their graduating BA/Scs and MA/Scs and to a lesser extent PhDs. The present “elite” rage in European higher education hasn’t changed this.
