“Surstr�ming”, perhaps?

But to be serious, I have noted that I started receiving German spam in my office mail some time ago. Given that I have a umu.se-address this was a little confusing – my best guess is that a German colleague had his or her computer hit by a virus/trojan/whatever and that the spamsters – or spam-applications – simply assume that addresses harvested stolen from a German computer are German.

Now the spam flood seems to have reached a new level as I receive spam-mails with subject headings in Swedish (the names of the “senders”, strangely, are still sort-of-English). Swedish banks, Nordea in particular, have long been targets of phishing attempts but this looks like a new development.

In case you wonder: Ume� University’s network doesn’t – as far as I can see – filter spam centrally (I guess that some departments at the medical faculties would run into problems) and the webmail doesn’t have a “spam” folder, so I have to remove spam manually when I am out of the office. I have a yahoo.se address which was harvested stolen when the computer of one of my cousins was hit by a virus but Yahoo just like gmail has a central spam-filter.

  So Steve does things like this because he can. It reaffirms his iron grip over both Apple and Apple�s customers. It�s a lot about ego and a little about business, though with Steve Jobs they are hard to differentiate.
