Meanwhile research using DNA-evidence has shown that many of the attacks on cattle and sheep usually blamed on wolves and bears are in fact carried out by dogs. In other instances, foxes and crows have eaten parts of animals that have already died of natural causes.
Carnivores play a certain role in Swedish politics – farmers and hunters are generally hostile to wolves and to a lesser degree bears and want to increase the quotas in the annual hunt. Parties who compete for the rural vote – in particular the Social Democrats and the Centre Party – consequently often face tricky dilemmas when they try to balance a “green” image with vote-seeking.
One former colleague can testify that emotions in Sweden regarding carnivores often run high: After publishing a research report on attitudes towards carnivores and regulations of the carnivore stock, she was forced to remove some of her contact information in order to avoid harassment.
PS: At 45 kgs, the shot bear was a small one. A fully-grown St. Bernard clocks in at 65-100 kgs.
