The Not-So Big Three

The Big Three in Danish Politics

I’m rushing to the support of Social-Liberal Party leader Marianne Jelved here. Not that she needs my gallant intervention, but anyway:

The question is: Are Danish politics becoming more presidentialised as journalists endlessly argue?

My answer is no: Until the mid-1960s, the Social Democrats and the Liberals were the dominant actors in the Danish party system. Since then things have become more complicated.

The illustration shows the combined support for the big three in Danish politics – the Social Democrats, the Liberals and the Conservatives (note that the y-scale starts at 40%) since the introduction of proportional elections in 1918.

Update: Politiken predicts the demise of the Social Liberals.

Happy Meal

The latest news from Denmark:

Police buy food from McDonalds for detained activists (Politiken)

Should this count as “cruel and unusual punishments”? (According to the commanding police officer the choice of food was determined by what was available late Saturday night).
