Better Never than Late

From the Department of Truly Surprising Blunders: Ernst-Ewald Roth (SPD) will not be the next mayor of the City of Wiesbaden. The reason? The local SPD-branch forgot to enter his name in time before the elections.

On Friday, the executive committee of the local SPD-branch announced its resignation and the leader of the SPD-group in the local council commented:

This is as stupid as it can possibly get

There is one interesting political point to the story: Wiesbaden is governed by what the Germans call a “Jamaica-coalition” (CDU (black) – FDP (yellow) – Greens) and the SPD had taken the unusual step of nominating a Catholic priest as its candidate for the Mayor’s office to boost its chances of gaining the post when the present incumbent steps down in July. A cunning, and partly controversial, scheme which in the end came to nothing.

Starting A New Year

Christmas has ended, I’m back in Umeå, WordPress has been updated – and look: Fireworks. Next: The 2006 review will be continued.

Completely off-topic: Last Tuesday I happened to see Henrik Nordbrandt in Fiolstræde in Central Copenhagen while I was out shopping. A very cool start to the year. Besides being one of Denmark’s finest poets, Nordbrandt is also one of the few Danes with a profound knowledge of Turkey and Turkish culture.

Next week: Exams.
