1st January 2007: The Day of the Local Government Reform
Just a short note to mark that 1st January 2007 is an important day in Danish local government: Today the comprehensive local government reform which turns 271 local authorities into 98 and replaces 14 counties with 5 regions is put into force. It is one of the largest reforms to be implemented in recent Danish history – the local government reform of 1970 is the only likely challenger to the title – and what is worth noting is the speed with which is was implemented. The legislation was prepared during 2004, elections for the new local and regional bodies held in 2005 and the entire system implemented as of today.
The reform not only changes the political and administrative face of Denmark: The police and court system is also being reorganised fundamentally.
And for me? Well, 2007 will be a year of major changes. And that is all that I can say at this moment.
To Eszter and Avi: Yes, I’ve seen your questions/invitations and will return to them at some point in the near future but I’m away and on a dial-up connection for the next week (opening Flickr takes forever) and have exams in the week after. Please be patient.
