The Famous Schleswig-Holstein Question, Part II

without comments

After the shenanigans of March 17, the Landtag of Schleswig-Holstein today elected a new head of government. As expected Peter Harry Carstensen was voted into office with a massive majority.

This vote was not without some drama, however. While the CDU and SPD hold 59 seats in the Landtag but only 54 votes supported Carstensen. 7 voted against him while 8 MdLs cast blank votes.

Before the vote, FDP had announced that its MdLs would cast blank votes (4 votes) while GRÜNE and SSW voted against Carstensen (6 votes).

There is no indication of which parties the defectors came from: The best guess is probably that we are seeing a relatively large split within the SPD’s parliamentary group, this time including people who for one reason or the other would have preferred a SPD-GRÜNE coalition under Heide Simonis supported by the SSW.

More detailed information on exit-polls from the Schleswig-Holstein election can be found on this page with information supplied by the NDR.
